SAWBACK

(User)

This is an original German Private Purchase Sawback Sidearm. It is well made and nicely balanced. The blade itself measures 11.5 inches, with an overall length of 17 inches. It has a cutting edge on top with sharp double sawteeth on the bottom. There is a solid brass cross guard with the top quillon having a hook to secure the leather retaining strap. The retaining strap has been neatly repaired at some point. Unit marking 3.J.25. on the cross guard with WK on the ricasso, and a #12 on the inside guard near the handle. The leather scabbard is in fine condition with a brass tip, solid stitching to both the rear scabbard & frog which is attached by rivets. Scabbard throat has a metal guide to protect the inner leather from the sharp sawteeth. A very well made sidearm. **A very knowledgeable collector/author/researcher has said this piece is pictured in Eugen von Halasz catalog/book as Sanitatssage used by medical corps (see photo). Also, this particular sidearm appears in a 1933 Eickhorn Blankenwaffen Catalog as item #1374 in the German Sidearm section (see B&W illustration from the catalog). An Excellent example.

I´d like to point out that the term "medical saw" is misleading - this saw is not meant for medical purposes and is not a surgical instrument. I collected antique surgical instruments a while ago.

Thank you for your input. This item is a bit out of my realm of interest. Any suggestions as to how I should refer to this piece would be appreciated. I chose to use the term that was given in articles on this forum.
