I have yet to see an actual case for it being counterfeit other than "this sword is rare and none are in this type of shape". You were wrong on multiple fronts on the inscription and on the Madonna drawing.

I have yet to hear how leather is aged uniformly especially on the scabbard.

The consensus of that group seems to say it is from the early 20th century, possibly a coronation blade. The issue with that determination is the fact that those coronation blades were made by reputable smiths who signed their blades properly. Pottenstein did not exist at that point.

The depth of the inscription seems to be the main point of contention yet I show as published Blondiau a very similar sword with a similar inscription. If I have definitive evidence it will be sent back to the auction house, but I have seen nothing but weak arguments and "opinions" not backed by evidence.

We live in Europe, very close to the countries where these fakes are made and we have our experience in this regard. Of course, none of these replicas will often appear with the same blade decorations, otherwise one would find out about it. We have learned that weapons appearing in literature can also be counterfeits, as the authors were already defrauded. With all of these facts and assumptions, gut instinct is very important. I see a saber that is far too well preserved for its supposed age. Absolutely no signs of wear on the blade and the handle. Such weapons have been used, sharpened, etc. You see an original in them. Let's stick to our opinions and learn more in the years to come.

Thomas

Thomas

Are we looking at the same sword? The leather especially the leather on the grip is very worn. It has even been clearly attempted to be restored at one point where someone painted it and even that has worn off to an extent. I know this repair was done later due to some of the paint falling in the holes in the leather on the scabbard.

The steel is in admittedly good shape, but I have other 200-year-old swords in the same type of shape.

Even the FB thread thinks it is a coronation saber made in the early 20th century, I've already laid out my reasoning of why I do not think so.

The ONLY concern I have is over some of the markings within the inscription. I have a 200-year-old Solingen blade that has similar beaded patterns in the inscription itself but is not as pronounced. Inscriptions done by hand all have a wide variety of differences, even some of the variants posted to the FB group are very different from one another.

As for inscriptions wearing over time, the same Solingen blade I speak of shows a good amount of wear to the bluing and gilt but none to the inscription itself. I cannot evidence completely the silver trim referencing household guards/palace guards but it would make sense if it were so to the general shape the sword is in.

I'm sorry did you just say Blondiau was defrauded and not a valuable author? Yeah ok, he lists the Madonna as a capture from the old monarchy era.
