The crown/RC sabers (the first of the renamed M1840 "wrist breakers") both cavalry and artillery are considered "first contract" in the USA.
The sabers marked crown FW47/48 are considered "second contract" and were imported for the Mexican war.
Regardless of the first contract having the RC stamp for export being it's own confusion, the later 47/48 swords are even more perplexing because no one has yet to explain why Prussian marks indicating Prussian surplus and possible Prussian use.
These were all in use at the outbreak of the US civil war, and since the rebels raided the federal armories they were absolutely used by both sides (along with Böker M1860s etc).
Although many former Prussian swords were sporadically used in this conflict according to archive pictures(Blüchers and Guard Hussar sabers to name a few, no doubt with FW stanps) the second contract cavalry and artillery sabers were specifically imported by the US ordinance dept to make up for shortages. This information is commonly known in US civil war circles, it's in the famous Tillman book on American cavalry swords. Regards, Geoff
